It's a sobering fact that mental health issues disproportionately affect members of the LGBTQ community. In a study (1) of LGBTQ Mississippians:
- 36% of cisgender respondents reported feeling depressed “most of the time” or “often” in the past 12 months. 65% of transgender respondents reported the same.
- 15% of cisgender respondents reported feeling like they wanted to die “most of the time” or “often” in the past 12 months. 48% of transgender respondents reported the same.
- 58% of cisgender respondents reported feelings of anxiety “most of the time” or “often” in the past 12 months. 83% of transgender respondents reported the same.
- High school students who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual are more than four times as likely to have attempted suicide compared to their heterosexual peers.(2)
- 40% of transgender adults have attempted suicide in their lifetime, compared to less than 5% of the general U.S. population.(3)
Overall, LGBTQ Mississippians report serious mental health problems at a proportion almost six times greater than the general population. (1)
How we treat others matters.
Hope is here. But it’s up to each of us to be a part of it.
